The Silence in the Office

The envelope with the trip money vanished from the classroom, and Alice was the last one there. There is a real explanation — but it belongs to someone else, and she promised to keep it. The adults want an answer today, and the price of silence is known in advance.

On Friday the envelope with the trip money disappears from the classroom, and Alice was the last one there, on duty, locking up. On Monday Alice happens to see Sonya putting the envelope back, and hears the request: "I will pay it all back. Just do not tell." After that it moves fast and ordinarily. The deputy head asks straight out, the parents are called in, the name disappears from the trip list, and the class goes quiet whenever Alice comes near. Sonya explains in a whisper that she took it for her dog's operation and returned every coin — and asks again. On Wednesday Alice catches her at the gates: Sonya is being moved to another school, and the secret is about to leave with her. She will not say it herself, and Alice can see she is not lying about home. In the office, with the deputy head and the parents waiting, Alice says one thing only: "I am not going to explain." The adults never learn the truth. On the last day Sonya silently holds out the classroom key and holds the look a second longer than usual.

«On Friday the envelope with the trip money disappeared from the classroom, and you were the last one there: on duty, locking up. By Monday everyone knew it, and the looks had changed. There was nothing to explain.»
